Zearalenone (ZON) is a mycotoxin which is produced by Fusarium species. It triggers hormone-like reactions in the body. This estrogenic effect has an influence on tumor formation, such as breast cancer, in hormonally sensitive tissues.
As part of consumer protection it is vital to examine food and feed on their content of ZON. The legal limits are regulated differently in different countries and are legally defined EU-wide at 400 µg/kg for unprocessed maize, 100 µg/kg for breakfast cereals or 20 µg/kg for infant food.
