Regulations and Labeling Requirements
In the EU, the labeling of food products that contain or are derived from GMOs has been mandatory since 1998. Current regulations include:
- Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011: Governs the labeling of food products, including GMO content.
- Regulation (EU) 2018/848: Relates to organic production and labeling, aiming to prevent GMO contamination in organic products.
- Regulation (EU) 2019/1381: Enhances transparency in the risk assessment of GMO products and introduces new requirements for risk disclosure.
- Regulation (EC) No 1830/2003: Ensures requirements for the traceability and labeling of GMOs.
