T2 and HT2 toxins are to be counted among the type A trichothecenes, which are mainly formed by fungi, such as Fusarium sporotrichioides.
Their toxic or carcinogenic effect is detectable both in mammals and birds, particularly affecting the skin and the respiratory tract as well as the formation of blood cells.
In the context of consumer protection, it is therefore essential to check food and feed for their contamination with T2/HT2.
Thresholds are defined for the overall content of T2 and HT2 toxin as e.g. 1000 µg/kg for unprocessed oats, 200 µg/kg for cereals or 15 µg/kg for infant food.
A list of currently available aokin T2/HT2 products can be downloaded here.
