Zeranol

Zeranol, also known as Zearanol or α-Zearalanol, is a potent synthetic estrogen used as an anabolic agent and growth promoter in veterinary medicine. While it is approved for use in livestock production in the United States, its use is not permitted in the European Union due to concerns about potential health risks and its classification as a hormone-like substance.

Zeranol mimics natural estrogens, promoting growth and muscle development in animals. Its action on the endocrine system raises concerns about its potential effects on human health through the food chain.

Prolonged exposure to Zeranol can lead to hormonal imbalances and associated health issues. The consumption of meat or animal products containing residues of Zeranol may pose risks, including potential endocrine disruption and increased cancer risk.

In the EU, the use of Zeranol is banned, and there are stringent regulations to prevent its presence in food products. In contrast, it remains legal in some other regions, where its use is carefully monitored.

Given the potential for illegal use and contamination, regular testing for Zeranol residues in food products is essential for consumer safety. This is particularly important in regions where the substance is banned (Nr. 396/2005, (EU) 2017/2279, (EG) Nr. 1829/2003), to ensure compliance with regulations and protect public health.
